Start a Professional Home Organizing Business

What you will be doing.  Knowing how to avoid clutter can equal money in your pocket.  Organization is an art form. 

It extends from offices to every area of your home. 

If everything has a place then it is easier to locate later.  Some people don’t have the time to do this and some don’t know how to do it effectively. 

As a professional organizer, you will teach people how to become better organized in an effort to simplify their lives at work and at home. 

How to start.  Decide on a niche market for your business.  Personal organizers deal with physically organizing rooms with various products, time management skills, and workflow advice using software applications.  Whatever your area of expertise when it comes to organization, let that be your guide.   

Demographic research sheds light on what type of organization is most needed in your area.  Areas heavy with corporations tend towards time management organization and workflow issues.  Smaller cities or towns may utilize the physical organization of materials and homes.   

Starting costs.  Starting costs are minimal.  A computer will come in handy to access the Internet and create flow charts and documents regarding organization for specific clients.  A cell phone and landline telephone allow you to be contacted by clients from anywhere at any time.  Including advertising, starting costs around $1,000 to $1,500 are feasible.  Already owning this equipment lowers start up costs. 

Skills needed.  The primary skill is organization and the ability to teach it to others.  While people need organization they are not easily convinced that it is the right solution for them.  Convincing them of the value of your services is an obstacle to tackle.  With good communication skills, confidence, and a perfected speech, you can make that happen. 

Professional organizers are people oriented.  Gauging personalities is an important part of knowing which organizational suggestions clients will be most likely to follow. 

Marketing.  Placing ads in the Yellow Pages, trade magazines, and newspapers is a start. 

In the meantime, showcase your talents through written articles and videos about different aspects of professional organization. 

Query professional magazines about starting a column in their publication that offers insightful articles about organizing.   

Joining professional organizations opens the door to networking opportunities and possible freelance jobs.  Give free seminars at community colleges, churches, and other civic arenas in the community.  Handing out flyers for personal professional organization after the seminar could net some new clients.

Organization is more than baskets, bins, and file cabinets.  Let the community know that you can offer these things and so much more as a professional organizer.
