Career Counsellor/Coaching Business
What you will be doing. Whether you are young or old, career
counsellors can help you find the job that you need. As a
career counsellor, you will advise others about changing
professions, resume writing, and a bit of job placement.
This service encompasses a variety of areas that are usually
found separately.
|
The more services you offer, the more appealing your
business will be. Working as a liaison between company human
resources departments and your customers gives them up to
date information on what companies are looking for in an
employee. Providing resume writing services can help the
person with the most anemic job history find a suitable
career.
Career counsellors that offer articles, tapes, courses, and
seminars for their clients do well. Additional services like
these provide information that customers can share with
others. If the customers are local, you can also offer face
to face seminars.
Providing your services to placement agencies, brings them
new workers and profits for you. Making sure your customers
have accurate resumes and interviewing skills will appeal to
these agencies. They will want to use you to bring them good
quality candidates for the jobs they need to fill.
How to start. Getting to know people is important. You will
be dealing with those who have lost their jobs. A delicate
touch is needed when advising them about where to go next.
People who want to take the next step up the corporate
ladder but don’t know how will seek you out for career
advancement advice.
Experience in human resources or other areas where people
skills are important is not required but helpful. Become a
member of civic organizations. Volunteering at homeless
shelters shows another cross-section of the community. Learn
how to approach different personalities and gain their
attention.
Keep an eye on trends in the job market. What is the
industry of those companies that are having layoffs? Who
could your potential customers be and what will they be
looking for?
Start up costs. Large costs are not needed. You will need a
computer with CD creation capabilities, publishing software,
a phone, and a fax machine. If you have these things, your
costs will run to advertising. These items are needed to
enhance the services that you offer.
Skills needed. You will need to be people oriented. Each
customer has individual needs that you will try to meet
through your network of resources. Joining online forums of
all types will provide useful information on human nature,
what people are looking for in their careers, retirement
life, and out of their finances.
A career counsellor is also a researcher. You will use the
Internet as a tool to network with businesses, financial
advisors, and other professionals that can help your
customers. Finding industry trend information for customers
is a must if they are looking for a career change.
Marketing. Building a comprehensive website will grow your
business. Not only can you advertise your services, you can
also add a forum, questionnaires for potential customers,
and links to helpful resources.
Advertise your services on eBay, MySpace, and other high
traffic areas. Sell informational CD’s, e-books on dealing
with career crises, and other helpful materials on eBay to
attract more attention to your website business. Offering
tele-courses and online classes for companies that are
downsizing will net big bucks for you and future customers
who need additional services.
Career counselling can help anyone looking to make a change
in their job. You can help them with interviewing skills,
what to wear, and how to follow up.
