Start a Cleaning Products Business

What you will be doing. What do people do on a regular basis? Clean. They clean their homes, businesses, churches, and schools. Cleaning products are in demand. With the state of the environment, everyone is looking for better cleaners that are less toxic to the body and the environment.

A cleaning products business will offer products to small and medium sized businesses. Once your products sell to them, schools and churches can be next on the list. This type of business is a home business that requires contact with the public to get your products sold.

If you plan to offer products over the Internet, contact a wholesaler that can drop-ship the items ordered to your customers. This relieves you from having to pack and ship chemical products through the mail. All the paperwork and extra shipping duties you avoid will be worth the cost.

How to start. Make a list of the area businesses that fit your size category. Cold calling can reveal if they have a contract with a cleaning company. If they do, don’t fret. Get your product in the door by pitching to the cleaning companies. They are always on the lookout for ways to purchase their products cheaper.

Push the idea of “eco friendly” products. Everyone wants to go “green” these days. Products like this are safer to the user. The scents are more pleasant and may work better. Investigating these products yourself will familiarize you with how well they work.

The test products you buy can be used in demonstrations at flea markets and other venues to interest people in the product. Housewives attend these shows and environmentally safe products protect their children and pets from toxic fumes. If you don’t want to go door to door in neighborhoods, perform demonstrations wherever you can that the target audience is present.

Start up costs. The cost of a round of tester products could be around $300. If you plan to use a wholesaler, this is all you will need besides a computer for the Internet and to run your business website. If you already own a computer, advertising is your other budget item. Use a printer for flyers and business cards.

Skills needed. An outgoing personality is the friend of a people oriented business. You will be dealing with rejection from some and sales from others. Despite it all, a good attitude is needed to persevere. Know your product. People who clean for a living will ask the tough questions about your product. If you can’t answer you could very well lose the sale. Practice your presentation. You may answer all of their questions up front.

Marketing. Advertise by flyer and business cards. Door to door is a good way to meet people and let them know what you have. Try out a marketing strategy on friends and family to gauge how well it will work on the general public. They can give you tips about cold calls and door to door sales. If you know people with their own business, ask them to consider your product. Staying current with cleaning product trends can help when trying to reach your target audience.

Cleaning is a business with room to grow. People will always need to clean and want better ways to do it faster and less. Your business product can be just what they are looking for.
