How To Become a Copywriting Editor Online

Customers and clients are encouraged to purchase online when the copy they read is clear and the layout of the webpage engaging.

Often times website owners are experts at producing the product or service they sell but may be less skilled at ensuring that the copy on their website is well written.

That’s a job that can be well managed by a skilled copy editor.

 

Sales Copy 

The primary means of creating a sale online is through the use of copy that grabs the attention of prospective buyers. This is done through the use of well researched key words and clear, persuasive copy.  

A good copy editor understands this and ensures that sales copy is written both with the search engine in mind and the needs of individual readers.  A page of copy that is optimized for the search engine with well placed key words will pull the target market to a client’s website but persuasive copy will keep them there and encourage a potential purchase. 

Accuracy 

In addition to understanding the strategic purpose of website copy a copy editor also tends to the basics of copy editing and that is checking and proof reading for correct spelling, punctuation and grammar usage. 

Many website owners write and publish ebooks and blogs and while they may possess good writing skills, they none the less often need a good “second eye” to proof their materials for accuracy and for effectiveness. 

Layout and Design

Copy editors are not only concerned with the effectiveness and accuracy of text they also look at the general layout of pages.  A copy editor can review a page to determine whether or not it is too busy, distracting or amateur looking to appeal to a target audience. 

Following are some of the copy issues that impact the success of an online business: 

Design and Style:

Sometimes a font size change is what is needed to emphasize a call to action on a sales page. Other times a change in font color or margin settings helps to make a page more readable.  Making a sales page more readable will likely have a positive impact on the rate of conversion (percentage of page visitors who become customers).

Poor layout:

Many websites simply cram too much text onto a page, or create copy containing one long paragraph after another.  In another format this kind of text layout might be fine but on websites dense, lengthy copy tires the eyes and could cause many visitors to leave before considering what it is the website is selling.  

Email:

Email is among one of the most effective ways to build a relationship between a company and its target market.  It is, therefore, very important for prospective customers to receive emails that communicate in a tone that is appealing and conversational while at the same time extremely relevant and to the point.  Time is a precious commodity and website owners can’t afford to turn off prospects with emails that are long winded or poorly written.

All of the above are examples of the kinds of copy and layout problems that a copy editor can spot and fix. 

When a website publisher is relying on the persuasiveness of blog posts, emails and sales pages to generate their income, they can’t afford to have ineffective copy in any of those places. For this reason good copy editors can develop a very good business promoting their services to online publishers.
