How to Start A Dental Claims Processor Service

What you will be doing.  When people visit the doctor, the office files a claim with their insurance carrier.  The claims are reviewed and paid according to benefits outlined in the patient’s policy.  All claims are not accepted.  Some are denied.   As a claims processor, you will go through the proper channels to prepare and file the claim.  If the claim is denied, you will investigate the reason, becoming the liaison between the client and the insurance company.

How to start.  Learning all that you can about the claims process will instill confidence in your clients concerning your abilities.  Find contact information for private dental insurance companies that are frequently used.  This includes insurance companies that are not native to your area.  If you set up an Internet component to the business, you will need to be familiar with dental insurance companies across the country and beyond. 

Starting costs.  An extensive database of dental insurers and their particulars will need to be created to make your job easier.  Various manuals on claims and processes along with each company’s forms will be needed in your home office.  Other equipment such as a computer, software for spreadsheets and medical coding, printer, scanner, fax machine, telephone with headset, Internet access, and a copier are essential to a professional office.   

Advertising for clients and educational materials will complete the starting costs.  Courses in medical claims processing can give you an edge in your chosen business field.  Expect costs to reach $5,000 or more. 

Skills needed.  Excellent communication and a listening ear are vital.  Claims can be denied because of a miscommunication.  You don’t want this.   

Most patients don’t understand medical jargon.  As a liaison for them, you will need to translate the medical speech into layman’s terms for them.  Your knowledge of medical terms can help decipher what the patient is telling you about the procedures they had done. 

Marketing.  Included in the startup costs is advertising costs.  Advertising in newsletters, medical journals, classified ads, and the Yellow Pages is a great start.  If you can afford it, have brochures printed and send mailings out to local dental offices.  Use your friends and family to spread the word about the new career you have embarked on. 

An online presence could increase your business by leaps and bounds.  A website can pull in people from other parts of the country that need your services.  Online tutorials for medical terminology and appeal processes for claims can add income to your business.
