What you will be doing.  In today’s society, people have turned to more natural methods of healing.  More illnesses require more pills to combat them.  Some of these medications have side effects that are just as serious as the conditions that they treat.   

As an herbalist, you will use your knowledge of plants, herbs, and their medicinal properties to aid others.  Developing remedies and other products specific to their ailments can ease pain in a natural way with no side effects.  You will also offer advice to better their health through diet and herbal supplements. 

How to start.  There are accredited schools of herbal healing that offer programs in herbal medicine.  You can also take online courses from the comfort of your own home.  Once you have the credentials to practice as an herbalist, start your own practice.  Think of a business name and get the business registered.  

Starting costs.  To get started you need to have the knowledge.  Degree courses in herbal medicine can cost a few thousand dollars.  A home office is also needed as a base of operations.   

The home office consists of a computer with Internet access, printer, fax machine, copier, herbal texts, anatomy books, and a telephone.  If you plan on making your own preparations at home, you will need a clean area to store your herbs and create the treatments. 

Permits and licenses needed to manufacture these products are to be obtained before you offer the services.  All total, you can be looking at $5,000 to $8,000 to get started. 

Skills needed.  An interest in medicine and helping people is the foundation of your business.  To operate as an herbalist, you need the proper instruction so that you are knowledgeable about herbs, plants, and human physiology.  Continuing education will help your business grow. 

Some customers may be nervous about using alternative medicine.  Your friendly manner can put them at ease, whether in person or over the telephone.  If people are comfortable with you, they will use your services. 

Marketing.  People need to know where to find the alternative medical practitioners they seek.  Take out ads in health publications and the telephone directory.  Send out brochures discussing your enterprise to hospitals, nursing homes, and doctor’s offices.   

A website will establish your online presence.  You can buy ad space on other home business websites and medical websites.  Creating how-to videos for YouTube will bring customers to your website.  Offer visitors informative articles on herbal health.  A forum gives customers a place to discuss their opinions of your business.
