Become an Image Consultant

 

What you will be doing.  Ever wonder why television personalities and politicians look so good?  They have people that tell them how to dress for maximum effect.  These people are called image consultants. 

As an image consultant, you will help others look your best.  Getting ready for an interview calls for an outfit that matches the look a company is looking for.  A public position demands that every time people see you, they see a handsome image.

How to start.  Start with family and friends.  Use them as models to practice your presentation.  Image consultants travel with makeup kits, color swatches in different fabrics, style books, and other accessories to create a complete look for the client.  You will need something similar.

Give your company a name.  The name should exemplify you and your business goals.  Register your business and have business cards made. 

Starting costs.  What you need to get started determines the starting costs.  For home office central, a laptop computer, printer, fax machine, telephone, and the appropriate software should be all you need to get started.  A laptop computer allows you to move your office anywhere you are needed. 

You can use computerized images of clothing and body styles to show clients what works best for them.  This type of software may be expensive.  Look to spend around $4,000 for all of your equipment including swatches and a comprehensive makeup kit.

Skills needed.  A background in fashion design or cosmetology would give you an advantage but it is not necessary.  A sense of color and style can be self taught through resource material.  If you already have a natural talent and eye for putting together a great look, it will be that much easier to learn the finer details.

Marketing.  You can sculpt an Internet business out of image consulting with the right contacts.  One idea to get the word out is to host a party.  Call it a “makeover” party.  Invite friends and family.  Bring all of your wares and give them each a free consultation.  You can even do makeup tips for the ladies.  This gives you a chance to fine tune your presentation.

Set up your website.  Enter into business cooperatives with other fashion oriented businesses that you are not in direct competition with.  This can include hairstylists and makeup providers.  Advertising on these sites will bring you business as well.  You will be helping each other make a profit.
