The Internet has become the most popular tool for
consumers searching for products and services
anywhere. Using a search engine like Google or
Yahoo, consumers type what they’re looking for and
expect to find the right resource in the top 5 or so
websites included in the list of websites the search
engine returns to them.
How to get a
company in the top URL returns on that list is the job of a keyword analyst.
Once a niche is selected the keyword analyst has to determine the right keywords
that the market is currently using to find leading competitor websites in the
client’s niche.
Using tools like
Google Keyword Suggestion Tool or WordTracker to identify terms used by Internet
users searching that niche, a keyword analyst arrives at a variety of relevant
key word phrases.
A good analyst will
ensure that phrases selected will be one’s that are specific enough to attract
actual purchasers. At the same time the keyword analyst wouldn’t want to select
a phrase that is so specific that it’s rarely used by those searching for the
kinds of products or services sold by the client.
SEO and Pay-Per-Click Advertising
Essentially a good
keyword analyst will choose 3-4 word phrases that reflect popular search phrases
used on the search engines for that particular niche. This is called Search
Engine Optimization (SEO). As these words resonate well with the target or
niche audience they will also be ideal for Pay-Per-Click advertising campaigns
(see more below).
A good variety of
well-searched phrases will enable the website owner to incorporate these terms
in appropriate copy throughout various sections/pages of the website (good for
Search Engine Optimization).
Pay-Per-Click
advertising campaigns include those advertisements that are visible on Google
search pages for particular search phrases or words. Clients can purchase
Pay-Per-Click products like Google AdWords using the well researched phrases
surfaced by the keyword analyst.
Based on the
phrases chosen and the dollars invested in the advertising campaign, a publisher
can attract sizeable traffic with this strategy.
Competition
In addition to
finding the most often used keywords of prospective customers for a particular
niche, the keyword analyst also considers the competitiveness of each phrase.
For example, let’s
say a client sells Victorian decorating books from his website. Achieving top
ranking in the search engines for keywords like “books” will be fairly difficult
as the client will be up against online giants like books and product seller
Amazon.com.
In such cases the
keyword analyst may be well advised to drill down using a keyword search tool
(e.g. WordTracker) to find other strong keywords for the client’s Victorian
decorating book products. Although these other words and phrases may be less
competitive they should still be capable of achieving high search engine
rankings.
Keyword analysts
are positioned to be an extremely valuable service for strategic and successful
online business owners..
