Start a Pet Treats Business

What you will be doing.  Even pets deserve a special treat every now and again.  Gourmet treats for pets are a hot commodity.  Catering to pets is the “in” thing to do. 

A pet treat business offers nutritious treats to pet owners for their favorite dog or cat.  These treats can be homemade or straight from the manufacturer.  The decision is up to you.   

How to start.  Pet treats are available for cats and dogs.  Examine your market.  If you see a need to offer treats for other animals in your area, this could be a way to corner the pet treat market.  You will need to search for a distributor that carries those treats. 

Starting costs.  These costs vary depending on how many types of treats you will carry.  If you have a business license, you can work with a pet food wholesaler.  He/she can drop ship your products directly to clients when they order from you.  This works primarily for an online business when clients can be anywhere in the world. 

If you plan to sell at local venues, equipment for a booth space is required.  A computer with spreadsheet and accounting software keeps track of orders and the financial aspect of the business.  Advertising flyers can be printed. 

Manufacturing your own pet treats requires a space to mix and bake the goodies.  Packaging, labeling, and storage are also required.  As a ballpark figure, the pet treat business could cost from $500 to $2,000 depending on whether you have the necessary equipment already or not. 

Skills needed.  You must love pets.  As a pet lover, you will know what pets like and dislike in a treat.  Your own pets can be the taste testers for your homemade gourmet pet treats.  If they don’t like it, neither will another pet.

Listen to your customers.  A website with a forum will connect you with customers and give you feedback about your products and customer service.  Their comments can be invaluable to the business. 

Marketing.  Give out flyers at dog parks and in the neighborhood.  Mail brochures about your company to pet hospitals, kennels, pet groomers, and dog parks.  Pet stores may be willing to carry your product.  This may be a tough sale, but it’s worth a try. 

Create a pet friendly website to sell your treats.  Advertise on pet websites and forums.  Sell advertising space to pet lovers and pet business owners on your website. 

People cater to their pets as one of the family.  A pet treat business coincides with that idea.  Sell your treats to those who want the best for their pets.
