Start a Sports Fan Merchandise Business

What you will be doing.  For every sports team out there, there is a fan lurking somewhere?  Never heard of the South Carolina Gamecocks?  Someone has.  And if you sell their merchandise, you will make a loyal customer out of that fan no matter where he lives in the country. 

As a sports fan merchandiser, you will be selling any and everything that appeal to the casual fan and the sports fanatic.  The more obscure the item, the better it will sell.  Be careful though, there is a lot of competition in this business, but still room for more.

How to start.  Develop your business plan.  What will you sell?  Will you market high school sports, collegiate sports, or national teams?  The broader the market, the more room you have to work with.  Conversely, if you specialize in a certain area of the market, you may find a few items that sell extremely well. 

Study all aspects of the sports arena you want to tackle.  While each team has a fan, some may be more popular at the moment than others.  Starting with more merchandise relating to the popular teams is a way to go.  While you’re at it, check with suppliers.  Wholesale dealers will become your best friends.  Choose the ones with the best prices and the most professional merchandise.   

Starting costs.  Depending on the range of items you want to market, an online business venue may serve your needs better.  With a wholesaler that is willing to drop ship orders to customers, you won’t need to store inventory. 

Deal with wholesalers that sell officially licensed merchandise approved by the governing bodies of the athletic world.  With advertising, computer, Internet access, telephone, fax machine, and printer, start your business for under $1,000.  

Skills needed.  Knowing a thing or two about sports is helpful.  As a fan yourself, you will know what people are looking for.  Keychains may be overdone for the Eagles fan.  You can leave them out or look for a new twist on a keychain that has not been seen before. 

Marketing.  Your website will be the face of your business.  Treat it like a real store.  Organize appropriately to make navigation user-friendly for all visitors.  Clear, color pictures and detailed descriptions go a long way to snagging business. 

Advertise in sports magazines and online directories.  Join sports forums and let them know about your new business.    Take every opportunity to grow your sports fan merchandise business. 

Every real sports fan has to own a bit of merchandise especially during the big game.  Sell merchandise that sports fans can't live without.
