SEO & Traffic Reports - Part 3: How to Add Your Keywords
Effectively Integrate Your Keywords and Your Content.
Content is a fantastic tool, one of the best, to improve search
engine ranking. Search engines rank sites with quality content very
highly. The key to using content to improve search engine ranking is
to integrate your keywords right into the copy.
Here’s how to do it right:
Begin by creating quality content. Customers, and search engines,
like content that provides value. This means your content offers a
benefit to your readers. Types of content that work well are:
• Informative articles
• Special reports
• Interviews with an industry expert
• Product reviews
• Discussion forums
• A blog
• “How to” guides
• Tips lists
• Training courses
• Extracts from info products
Once your article is written:
Once your copy is written, it is time to go back into it and
optimize it for your keyword or keyword phrase. The reason to do
this after you write your copy is so that the words flow more
naturally.
You’ve probably read articles that were optimized for a keyword as
they were being written. You can tell because every other word is
the keyword or keyword phrase. It often makes the copy read very
awkwardly and feel forced.
Here are some of keyword tricks of the trade you’ll use in your
copy.
Keyword density. This is the number of times or frequency a
particular keyword is used in your copy compared to the number of
words in your copy. To calculate your keyword density, divide the
number of instances of the keyword by the total number of words on
the page. Aim for a 3% to 7% keyword density.
Keyword proximity. This is the way a keyword phrase is used.
If the whole phrase is used together it will have more value with
the search engine than if the words that make up the phrase are
scattered throughout a paragraph or sentence.
Keyword prominence. Where do you place your keywords in your
copy? Search engines prefer to look for and find your keywords in
headings, subheadings and the first paragraph of the body of the
text. Keywords in the rest of the text still have value, however it
doesn’t weigh as highly.
Speaking of headings…you’ll probably want to have your keyword in
your headline. One easy way to handle this, particularly if you’re
working with a difficult keyword phrase, is to separate it from your
true headline in your headline.
